The Kanwar Yatra is a disciplined act of devotion. Its rules — niyam — are simple but strict, and they shape everything a good shivir offers.
The core rules
- 🔱The kanwar must never touch the ground. If set down, it rests on a stand or wood — never bare earth. This is why our shivir provides dedicated kanwar stands.
- 🔱Keep purity of body and mind: only sattvic vegetarian food, no alcohol, no tobacco, no impure thoughts.
- 🔱Observe celibacy and calm through the journey; anger and quarrels are avoided.
- 🔱Do not touch the kanwar or the jal with unwashed hands, or after eating, until you have cleaned yourself.
- 🔱Many walk barefoot as an offering — which is why foot care is the most needed help on the road.
The types of kanwar
Not every vow is the same. The Saamanya (common) kanwar allows the bearer to rest and set the kanwar on a stand — these are the bhakts our shivir serves most. The Dak kanwar is a continuous, non-stop run to the temple. The Khadi kanwar is never set down at all; a companion holds it upright while the bearer rests.
Serve every bhakt as you would serve Bhole Nath himself — for in that month, they carry him on their shoulders.
How a shivir supports the vow
Once you know the niyam, the sewa makes sense: pure food for the vow of purity, stands so the kanwar never touches ground, foot care for the barefoot walk, and a quiet shrine for a moment of darshan before the bhakt sets off again.
