The Pilgrimage
The Kanwar Yatra, explained
Understanding the yatra is understanding why the seva matters. Here is the tradition, in brief.
Bhole Nath & his bhakts
A river of saffron, flowing home to Mahadev
Each Sawan, millions of devotees of Lord Shiva — kanwariyas — travel to the Ganga, fill sealed pots with her sacred water, and carry them home to pour over their local Shivling as an offering of love and thanksgiving.
They walk clad in saffron, chanting “Bol Bam” and “Har Har Mahadev”, keeping strict purity and a devoted heart the whole way.
Why Sawan
Shravan is Lord Shiva's month — the time he drank the halahal poison to save creation, becoming Neelkanth. Offering Ganga jal now is the highest devotion.
The kanwar
A decorated pole balancing two sealed pots of Ganga jal on the shoulder, carried — often barefoot — hundreds of kilometres back to a home Shiva temple.
India's largest yatra
Once a small pilgrimage of a few saints, it is now India's biggest annual gathering — an estimated 25–30 million bhakts walk each Sawan.
The Niyam
The rules every kanwariya keeps
The kanwar carries a vow, and the vow carries rules. They shape everything a good shivir provides.
- ✦The kanwar must never touch the ground — it rests only on a stand or on wood.
- ✦Keep purity of body and mind: sattvic vegetarian food only, no alcohol or tobacco.
- ✦Observe celibacy and a calm mind; avoid anger and quarrels through the journey.
- ✦Do not touch the kanwar or jal with unwashed hands or after eating.
- ✦Many walk barefoot as an offering — so foot care is the greatest need on the road.
Kinds of Vow
Types of Kanwar
सामान्य कांवड़
Saamanya Kanwar
The common kanwar — bhakts may rest and set the kanwar on a stand along the way. This is who our shivir serves most.
डाक कांवड़
Dak Kanwar
A continuous, non-stop run to the temple without resting — the fastest and most demanding vow of all.
खड़ी कांवड़
Khadi Kanwar
The kanwar is never set down; a companion holds it upright while the bhakt rests, keeping it forever standing.
